Wedgwood isn't a "church"...according to my 5-year-old

A few months back my kids and I visited Mars Hill's Wedgwood Campus. We had the privilege of hearing Pastor James Harleman preach on discipline. It was a great message, and it was beautiful to consider how James has grown, as a pastor and as a friend. I still remember vividly the day many years back when James and I met at Starbucks to discuss how he might get more involved with the church. He agreed to come on board as a starving intern to help out our small (less than six) staff. James became a Christian through the ministry of Mars Hill, and has now faithfully served on staff for many years. I love seeing God take a man from lost to found to a pastor committed to helping more people meet Jesus. James and I couldn't be more different, he likes comic books and sci-fi and I'm a dumb jock, but its cool to see how the Cross brings such diverse characters together for the same cause, to serve and glorify Jesus. What does this have to do with my kids? When we were leaving Wedgwood that day I asked them how their class was and what they thought of the Wedgwood Church. My oldest daughter, Kara (5), said she really enjoyed it. "But that isn’t a church," she said, referring to the building, which is hilarious because out of all Mars Hill’s campuses, the Wedgwood building is the one that most resembles a typical church. Ironically, when Kara pictures a "church," she thinks of our Ballard Campus or the Downtown Campus—both of which are basically renovated warehouses. It was funny to think about her perspective on church, and her comment actually led to some good conversations with all the kids about what defines a "church." It’s a concept we take for granted, and one that’s somewhat difficult to define, when you actually try. This Sunday, Pastor Mark will be doing just that as the Doctrine series continues with the sermon, Church: God Sends.
