Notes: It's All About Jesus – Humility

TEXT: Isaiah 6:1-4; John 1:1-3, 14; Philippians 2:5-8 TEACHER: Mark Driscoll RELEASE DATE: August 9, 2009 Panoramic scope of Jesus’ life: Glory – Incarnation – Humility

Glory (Isaiah 6:1-4 )

King of Kings

Jesus is King over all things; his reign never ends.

Seated on throne

  • He is not worried, distressed, or panicked; he is in control.
  • Living in enormous temple
    • Gives us a glimpse that God’s presence is like a temple.

Worshiped by angels

  • Some people worship angels, but these angels worship Jesus.
  • They are humble (covering face) – they know that they are not fit to be in his presence.

Holy, Holy, Holy

Chorus of angels singing continually in response to one another about God’s holiness.

John 12:41

  • "Isaiah said this because he saw Jesus’ glory and spoke about him" (NIV)
  • John knew Jesus personally and said this
Looking at Jesus’ glory leads us to conviction and repentance; comparing ourselves to each other leads to pride and haughtiness.

Incarnation (John 1:1-3)

  • Second member of Trinity
    • Not part of creation—Jesus pre-existed creation
  • In flesh
    • Latin incarne—Jesus took on literal human body
  • Hypostatic Union (1 person; 2 natures)
    • Fully God and Fully Man
    • NOT man became God—other religion teach that we humans can become gods; in Jesus, God became man
  • Self-esteem and pride teach that we can be our own God; we’re not God, we never will be.

Humility (Phil. 2:5–8)

Jesus set aside divine rights and continual use of the divine attributes.

Humility is...

  • Continually pursued by the grace of God
  • Required to become a Christian - can’t do anything to become a Christian
  • Required to grow as a Christian - humble people don’t wake up thinking "I deserve better"
Jesus went...
  1. From glory to humility
  2. From heaven to earth Had to go to funerals, experience death
  3. From wealth to poverty Born to a teenage girl, homeless for the last 3 years of life, had to receive food and shelter from others
  4. From throne to manger Taken to a humble town after birth, adopted by a carpenter father
  5. From worshiped to despised From "Holy, holy, holy!" in eternity past, to "Crucify him!"; could have brought devastation and judgment, but remained humble)
  6. From served to servant Became a slave, doing menial work; slave had the job of washing dung and dirt off of visitors’ feet—Jesus did this, even for Judas Iscariot who betrayed him

Pursuing Humility

No other religion is based on God being a humble servant; only the Bible teaches this. Worship is our response to the humility of Jesus.

1. Jesus is a humble teacher — be teachable because he will teach you

Be a humble learner

2. Jesus humbly forgives — be repentant because Jesus will help you

Acknowledge sin in pride; if he will humbly forgive, we should humbly apologize

3. Jesus is a humble leader — be submissive because Jesus will lead you

If he is humble enough to humbly lead, we should be humble enough to follow him

4. Jesus is a humble servant — be prayerful because Jesus will serve you

  • Some view God as if he is far away and doesn’t want to be bothered; he loves you and wants to be involved in the minutia of life.
  • Some say, "I’ll get cleaned up and then become a Christian," or, "Jesus is Lord, I just don’t want to bother him" — these are like saying, "I don’t need you."

5. Jesus humbly hears us — if he is listening, we should talk

Do you really believe that Jesus is alive, he loves you, he’s paying attention and he’s listening? He IS (Heb. 4:15–16).
