This Friday, Pastor James brings the
Film & Theology series back to his home turf for a screening of Neill Blomkamp’s
critically acclaimed sci-fi thriller,
District 9.
Here’s Pastor James’
preview:
In 1982, a massive star ship bearing a bedraggled alien population, nicknamed "The Prawns," appeared over Johannesburg, South Africa. Twenty-eight years later, the initial welcome by the human population has faded. The refugee camp where the aliens were located has deteriorated into a militarized ghetto called District 9, where they are confined and exploited in squalor. In 2010, the munitions corporation, Multi-National United, is contracted to forcibly evict the population with operative Wikus Van Der Merwe (Sharlto Copley) in charge. In this operation, Wikus is exposed to a strange alien chemical and must rely on the help of his only two new ‘Prawn’ friends.
The film is a fascinating, if not somewhat unsettling film that raises many questions about the limits of human kindness, charity and self-interest, particularly for Christians. Come to hear how Pastor James addresses the questions the film raises.
The
District 9 (2009) was
nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay. Watch the film’s official trailer

About Film & Theology:
Cinema is a modern day pulpit; people flock to their local multiplex and find themselves moved by a worldview expressed in narrative, influenced by directors and screenwriters and who affect how we feel, think, and act.
Monthly film viewings take place on the third Friday of every month at the Lake City Campus (3524 NE 95th St) and are followed by an expository exploration of narrative themes and spiritual parallels. RSVP here.
