Behind the Pulpit: Mark Driscoll’s Reading List
We know they all work on Sundays, but what do the lives of Mars Hill pastors look like the other six days of the week?
Here on the Mars Hill Blog, we’re starting a series of Q&As with the pastors: we’ll ask some of them the same questions and then post the different responses throughout the week. This week we’ll take a look at where their bookmarks are at. First up, Preaching Pastor Mark Driscoll.
MHB: What book of the Bible are you currently reading in your personal devotional time?
MD: I’ve often been told to separate my devotional life and my preaching life, i.e. I should study for myself and then study for my sermon.
But, I’ve never worked that way. I study for my sermon–as well as other preaching, writing, and teaching responsibilities in and out of Mars Hill–and then preach out of my personal study. I prefer to preach what I practice rather than practice what I preach.
Since it’s the book I’m preaching out of [and will be through 2012], right now I am enjoying the Gospel of Luke a great deal and have maybe 40 commentaries and reference materials I’m reading along with it.
Additionally, I’m reading books on culture: To Change the World by James Hunter; The Mirror Effect by Dr. Drew, who piqued my interested when I went on his show, Loveline Radio, in February; and other books on men’s issues (Unmasking Male Depression , by Archibald Hart, e.g.) and leadership (Sticky Teams , by Larry Osborne, is one).
In the Driscoll house, our son Gideon, age 4, likes us to read any one of his many kids bibles to him. Alexie, age six, is reading the First Step kids bible on her own. Calvin, eight, just finished reading the entire Jesus Storybook Bible on his own and is also reading some Matt Christopher books. Zac, ten, is reading through the New Testament and is in 2 Timothy. He’s also reading Ten Boys Who Changed the World and numerous baseball player biographies.
Ashley, 12, is reading the whole ESV Study Bible, with notes, and is in Numbers. She’s also reading Martin Luther’s Faith Alone devotional, other biblical studies, multiple fiction books, and is working on a series of book review blogs for junior high girls. Momma Grace is reading Finally Alive by John Piper and a biography on Luther’s wife called Luther and His Katie .
Tomorrow, Lead Pastor Jamie Munson will tell us what he’s learning by reading the books of the Bible in a less traditional way: chronologically.
