Film & Theology May screening: The Hurt Locker
Friday, May 21 @ 7pm
Mars Hill Church will fearlessly uncover and dismantle the Award-winning film that was highly praised but little-seen, "
The Hurt Locker" directed by Kathryn Bigelow. Pastor James Harleman, who oversees Film and Theology and hosts the website Cinemagogue, will be on hand to offer intriguing observations that connect the film’s narrative to our shared metanarrative.
SFC William James joins Bravo Company in Iraq, and surprises his team with a seeming lack of concern for the danger they are surrounded by. Is he out of his mind, or does he simply have a strong sense of identity and purpose? Is he an adrenaline junkie thriving on the emotional highs, or is something else at play here? Do we know people like Will, or his two compatriots… who seem either bound by rules or wracked with insecurity?
Even if our lives don’t involve literally disarming bombs in the heat of combat, a story about these relationships under pressure can tell us a lot not only about the "human condition", but things we all share in common under the sun, as image-bearers of God. Pointed in the wrong direction, we can be more destructive than the dirtiest bomb.
The timer is ticking down toward our viewing and discussion of The Hurt Locker at the
Lake City Campus of Mars Hill Church.
Join us this Friday May 21st at 7pm while we watch the film in its entirety followed by a brief unpacking of narrative themes and discussion points.
"The Hurt Locker" won Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Director in 2009. Bigelow also was the first woman to ever take home the latter. Watch the trailer
