The following is an excerpt from an interview the Mars Hill Lake City blog did with member Robin Lemke for their series on art and faith. Robin, a writer, novelist, and mother of three kids—ages 9, 4, and 2—spent several years working in the tech industry before becoming a mom. She’s been published in USA Today, Nintendo Power, and Relevant Magazine, for which she's also worked as an editor. We realize we totally missed the chance to ask her if she plays video games with her kids.
Q. What sort of impact do you hope to make through your writing?
Robin Lemke: Fiction can illustrate ideas and help people connect with them in a new way, and that’s what I’d like to do, to be part of the readers’ conversation with themselves, to help them see things in a new way—and to love the story at the same time. For instance, when Paul’s words about "fighting the good fight" or "finishing the race set before us" seem too cerebral in my head, I think about Frodo putting one foot in front of the other day after day after day with the burden of the ring weighing so heavily and the promise so great of flinging it into the fire, and it all makes sense.
Q. Do you see your writing as being an act of worship?
Robin Lemke: Romans 12:1-2 talks about being transformed by the renewing of our mind and presenting our bodies to the Lord as a spiritual act of worship; I think that by allowing God’s truths to come through my work, it can be seen as worship.
