Going to Rainier Valley, Taking Cues from Philly

How do you contextualize the gospel for a culture when you're ministering in the country's most diverse zip code where only 57% of residents speak English at home? Use music as your common language, that's one place to start, says Willie Wilson. Mars Hill is going to start to build a ministry in the Rainier Valley this summer. In this clip, Downtown Campus Pastor Tim Gaydos talks with new interns Wilson and Jevon Washington about their faith, their vision for the gospel in this multicultural part of southeastern Seattle, and what they learned about incarnational ministry from a visit to one inner-city Philadelphia church. From Pastor Tim: We believe that God starting something and the gospel is gaining momentum in the Rainier Valley.  We have a love for this area, he’s calling us to be apart of it, and we want to see the gospel move forward there.  We are beginning to cast vision for what a gospel work could look like in the Rainier Valley and leaders are already rising up.  With the help of new Mars Hill Downtown interns, Willie Wilson and Jevon Washington, we will begin new community groups there this summer and start doing neighborhood outreach events. If you have a heart for this area and want to be apart of it, email us at downtown [at] marshillchurch [dot] org.
