Basic Research Missing from Wall Street Journal Opinion Column
The Wall Street Journal posted an Opinion column by Brett McCracken yesterday that unfortunately, especially by The Wall Street Journal's high standards, contained some obvious, glaring errors. Here is what McCracken wrote about Pastor Mark in the article:
Sex is a popular shock tactic. Evangelical-authored books like "Sex God" (by Rob Bell) and "Real Sex" (by Lauren Winner) are par for the course these days. At the same time, many churches are finding creative ways to use sex-themed marketing gimmicks to lure people into church.... ...Then there is Mark Driscoll at Seattle's Mars Hill Church—who delivers sermons with titles like "Biblical Oral Sex" and "Pleasuring Your Spouse," and is probably the first and only pastor I have ever heard say the word "vulva" during a sermon.A simple search on MarsHillChurch.org would reveal that Pastor Mark has never preached a sermon with those titles. What Brett may be thinking about are Q&A clips where Pastor Mark answered questions from people in church, but never has he preached a sermon with those titles or with those aims. The Q&A clips are real questions from our congregation of young Christians. The questions are texted in during a service and answered by Mark after a sermon the same way he would answer the questions directly to the person, in a column, or on a blog. They are intended to directly address real questions young Christians have - and in a church that baptized over 800 new Christians last year, Mars Hill Church has a lot of them. The answers are not intended to shock, as Brett suggests, but to give pastoral answers to real questions from real people. Again, this irresponsible error could've been easily avoided by a simple search on the Mars Hill website. Additionally, Kevin DeYoung at the Gospel Coalition has illuminated McCracken's poor use of the main stat in his article. We trust that the Wall Street Journal will uphold its editorial standards by editing the article and printing a retraction at the bottom of the piece.
