Pit Stop Vacations

Custer Rest Area, I-5, Washington State

Washington State has some of the nicest freeway rest areas in the country—at least that’s the word among some visiting travelers. Whether or not that’s the case, I can’t think of any rest area—in Washington or on the planet—where I’d like to move in and settle down. They’re nice for stretching the legs and scoring some free coffee, not to mention the obvious, but no family ever set out for Disneyland and then decided to spend their vacation at John "Chuck" Erreca’s instead. As Christians, we’ve got eternity on the horizon and instructions for the journey. By God’s grace we even get some rest areas and scenery along the way (such as relationships, good food, sunny days). However, the temptation is to linger on these temporary blessings and forget about the eternal. In other words, we often put our hope in the temporal rather than the eternal. In Pastor Mark’s sermon on Luke 9:46–50, he explains how the human desire for greatness is not wrong but often misdirected. Similarly, we’re prone to fix our hope on "things that are on earth" (Col. 3:2). Whether it’s your job, your sex life, your education, or whatever, it’s not wrong to have godly goals, dreams, and ambitions, but Jesus must dominate the aim of our horizon. The good news is, when we get there, every true longing of the heart will be fulfilled in Jesus (2 Cor 1:20). Find Pastor Jamie on Facebook and Twitter.
