In this clip from 2008, financial grace is explained as the grace given to understand the source of our financial blessings and the ability to spend wisely and give generously.
The point is this: when we see that all of our money ultimately belongs to God and that he’s entrusted some to our care as stewards and that our money is a gift of God’s grace, it allows us to spend wisely and to give generously. It allows us to give to the church, so that other people would meet Jesus.
And the result is that I think there really needs to be an increased maturity in the understanding of financial grace. Some of you say, "My money’s not a gift, I earned it! I worked hard." And I would ask questions like,
"Well, who made the earth?" "God."
"Who made you?" "God."
"Who put you on the earth?" "God."
"Who gives you life and breathe?" "God."
"Who gives you skills, talents, abilities?" "God."
"Who gave you the job?" "God."
"Who gave you the ability to do the job?" "God."
"Whose money is it?" Probably not yours.
And when you understand that your money is grace, you don’t ask questions like, "Why do I need to give my money to God?" You ask questions like, "How much of God’s money do I get to keep?" You get to be gracious. That means you could also give to people—people who are hurting, people who are struggling, people who need financial assistance. You can give to them.
They’ll ask you, "Why do you give me money?" You say, "It’s grace. It looks like money, but it’s really grace. And it’s God’s grace. And he loves you. And he cares about you. And he’s worried about you. And he wants to take care of you. And he sent me here to show you that he’s a God of grace." The money is a way that we show grace.
This clip is taken from the sermon "Grace," which Pastor Mark preached in January 2008 as part of the Religion Saves and Nine Other Misconceptions sermon series. In the sermon, Pastor Mark explains fourteen ways God's saving grace has been given to the church in hopes of helping other believers better understand the grace of God.
Jesus was a man who claimed to be God. Think on that for a minute. If that were true, how would it change the way you thought, felt, and lived this life?
At Mars Hill, we believe that Jesus is God. We take him at his word. Because of this, everything we do is all about Jesus. We invite you to learn more about this man who is God and how you can find forgiveness and new life in him.
Visiting a church for the first time can be nerve-racking. But having an idea of what to expect can help. There are three main parts to every Sunday service: preaching, worship, and kids. To learn more about each of these, click the links below.
Church is more than a service. It’s people living life together and helping one another throughout our cities to serve our cities. Each week, thousands of people at Mars Hill meet in hundreds of small communities to learn about God, pray, eat, laugh, and live. We call these Community Groups—and they’re the heart of our church.
We provide a number of resources to help you grow as a disciple of Jesus. You’ll find videos on a number of topics and from various conferences. The Mars Hill Blog connects you to life around the church and personal growth. And Resurgence is a blog dedicated to helping you grow as a leader at home, work, and church.
Jesus is the most generous person who ever lived. He gave his life so that we might live. As Christians, we give our time, talent, and money joyfully in response to Jesus’ generosity and to help more people meet Jesus.
